Why do we care so deeply about numbers?

If your interaction cannot be accumulated or aggregated than what is it?

I had an art opening a few years ago and after a wonderful evening of sharing and socializing, of friends generously showing up from all corners of my life, I was asked how it went — In that moment I was disturbed to realize that I didn't know. After a decade of making and releasing art online through videos with viewed counts, websites with traffic counts, app-stores with ratings and downloads, I no longer knew how to appraise the quality of a real-life event with no analytics.

People used to say "don't be a statistic" but now everything we do is statistics.
